Misdirected Interests

Gary Rosenblatt’s excellent synopsis on the status quo deserves much praise
(“10 Lessons From The Gaza War,” Aug. 22).

One can surely
question why Israeli representatives over the years did not make use of the
Hamas Covenant, with its blatant anti-Semitism. How does one negotiate with a party
whose declared position is to destroy you?

Barbara Tuchman, one of the best American historians, wrote in her book, “The March
of Folly,” that “a phenomenon noticeable throughout history, regardless
of place or period, is the pursuit by governments of policies contrary to
their own interests.”

This is most certainly the case for Israel.
