As a SUNY graduate 35 years ago, I am disappointed to hear that SUNY is still having commencement exercises on Shabbat at any SUNY school, especially one of the four university centers (“Orthodox Jewish Commencement Speaker Gets It Done,” Jewish Week online, May 14.).
Has anything been done to try and stop this? I am active with the New York State Public Employees Federation Jewish Committee and was active in Jewish groups in college when I was at Buffalo State. I remember as a member of the College Senate that I made a motion that passed to change the school calendar so there would not be classes on the first day of Passover. This is an ongoing concern in the Jewish community.
