The editor’s column on the controversy over a [proposed] visit to Arafat’s grave in Ramallah by a Texas congregation (“Anatomy Of A Takedown,” Sept. 2) ends: “Rabbi Blumofe sadly noted, ‘it takes years to build a healthy community and a moment to rip it apart.’”
Who is responsible for that “moment?” Who, and what justification, were involved in planning that trip to the grave? Even rabbis can err and be asked “but what were you thinking?” on such a subject. And those who criticized him had every right and responsibility to do so.
I hope that a Jewish community in Judea and Samaria is on the list of
visiting sites since those places at least have relevance to the conflict,
unlike Arafat.
