In response to Gary S. Laveman’s Letter (Jan. 13) in which he concludes that Judaism requires Torah study and synagogue membership to exist, I would like to say this: I agree that recognition and participation in Jewish culture and society which includes traditions (shout out to Tevye!) and identity is important. I do not believe that a belief in God is an essential part, nor do I believe that a majority of Jews do, in fact, believe in God.
Critical thinking is a hallmark of Jewish tradition; thus, God has become a victim of our own success as rational, critical thinkers.
