For years, the Orthodox world’s biggest enemy against battling addiction has been the belief that it does not exist in the religious community. Today, not only is awareness — and acceptance of the problem — increasing, but there are now several addiction rehab facilities run in accordance with Orthodox guidelines. Many individuals who come to Retorno in Israel for rehab and recovery from substance abuse grew up in religious families. Whether or not they have left religious practice, the familiarity of their religion and culture enables them to focus on addressing the core issues that led them to addiction without the additional struggle of conformity.
