JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israeli army attacked several Hamas military targets in Gaza in response to an explosive device that was set off near a military bulldozer on the Israel-Gaza border.
There were no injuries reported to Israeli soldiers in and around the Caterpillar D9 bulldozer, which was conducting routine work Wednesday morning on Israeli territory near the border fence with Gaza.
Israeli tanks fired at three Hamas military observation posts east of Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood in retaliation, Ynet reported, citing Palestinian sources.
“The IDF holds Hamas responsible for all occurrences in Gaza and will not allow the terror organization to turn the area of the security fence into a combat zone,” the spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.
The IDF reportedly also charged that the explosive was put in place during last Friday’s March of Return protests by tens of thousands of Palestinian demonstrators that converged near the border fence.
