Police in Mount Vernon have increased their patrols outside the Fleetwood Synagogue following a vandalism attack on the Orthodox congregation on Saturday.

Capt. Angelo Fuccillo said the vandalism, swastikas and the letters "SS" that were discovered scrawled on the ground outside the building on Broad Street after Shabbat morning services, is being investigated as a bias crime.

Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis told the Journal-News that he was "disgusted" by the attack, which came two years after a Bronx man was arrested for recruiting minors to post pro-Hitler and white power stickers on several Mount Vernon sites, including the synagogue.

The Mount Vernon Police Department is seeking information about the crime at 914-665-2500.
