One of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi’s assassins was jailed for life.

Jerusalem District Court on Monday sentenced Hamdi Kuran, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorist group, to life in prison plus another 100 years after he confessed to the 2001 killing.

Kuran, who gunned down Ze’evi in a Jerusalem hotel, described the assassination as “self-defense.” The PFLP said it was avenging Israel’s assassination of one of its West Bank leaders weeks earlier.

Kuran and three other members of the PFLP assassination cell had been serving sentences in a Palestinian Authority prison in Jericho. But after foreign monitors withdrew from the prison in March 2006, Israeli forces seized the assassins.

Kuran’s three co-conspirators await sentencing.
