France’s new first lady has apologized for comparing a news magazine to the pro-Nazi press of the 1930s and 1940s.
In her first interview since marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy earlier this month, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was critical of an online report in the French news magazine Nouvel Observateur that was unflattering to her husband.
“If this kind of site had existed during the war, what would have happened with the denunciation of the Jews?” she was quoted in L’Express magazine, according to the BBC.
Bruni-Sarkozy later apologized.
“If I upset anyone, I am extremely sorry,” she said in a statement on the L’Express Web site.
