Olmert: Still time to stop Iran nukes

Iran can still be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons, Ehud Olmert said.

“I think there’s time,” the Israeli prime minister told reporters Wednesday when asked whether it was too late to stop Iran’s uranium enrichment program from producing enough fissile material for an atomic bomb.

“Time is not unlimited, but we are talking about more than months,” said Olmert, who is on a visit to Japan to shore up international pressure on Tehran.

Israel’s military intelligence chief, Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Iran has experienced some technical holdups but could have nuclear weapons by 2010.

Last year’s U.S. National Intelligence Estimate also predicted an Iranian bomb between 2010 and 2015, on the assumption that Tehran wants such weapons.
