A former Israeli finance minister was charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Avraham Hirschson was indicted Wednesday in Tel Aviv District Court for embezzlement, fraud, breach of trust and obstruction of justice in connection with his actions as the head of a trade union between 1998 and 2005.

According to prosecutors, Hirschson siphoned off more than $750,000 from the National Workers Organization and a subsidiary, Nili.

Hirschson stepped down as Israel’s finance minister when embezzlement allegations surfaced last year. He has denied wrongdoing.

The case stoked public scrutiny of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who is battling a police investigation into his own finances.
