The Israeli army cleared a tank crew of wrongdoing in the killing of a Reuters cameraman.
The military judge advocate-general ruled this week that an Israeli tank crew that fired on the cameraman during fighting in the Gaza Strip on April 16, killing him and eight other Palestinians, exercised sound judgment given the possibility that his equipment could have been mistaken for weaponry.
Reuters and the Foreign Press Association in Israel decried the decision, saying the cameraman had clearly marked himself as a journalist and had not behaved in a suspicious manner.
They said that by refusing to prosecute the tank crew, the Israeli military would in effect be condoning future attacks on journalists. Reuters threatened further legal action against those involved.
