Iran called its failure in a bid to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council an “obvious injustice.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi made the comment and decried Japan’s attempts to “monopolize” the seat, in a statement to reporters in Teheran on Monday.

Japan won the secret vote for the Asian council seat on Friday with 158 votes to 32 votes. It is the tenth time Japan will sit on the council.

The Islamic Republic may have been the first country to campaign for a Security Council seat while under sanctions from the world body.

Iran last sat on the Security Council in 1956.
