JERUSALEM (JTA) — Mauritania has closed its embassy in Israel, the head of the country’s military junta said.
Gen. Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz said Tuesday that the move did not mean that Mauritania, a predominantly Muslim country, was severing relations with Israel, the Associated Press reported.
Last month the Arab League country, one of only three to have diplomatic relations with Israel, said it would suspend its ties to the Jewish state due to the military operation in the Gaza Strip. Tens of thousands of Mauritanians protested the operation in the country’s capital, Nouakchott.
