JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two Israeli police officers were killed in a shooting attack in the Jordan Valley.
A group calling itself the Imad Mughniyeh Group claimed responsibility Monday for the previous evening’s shooting in an anonymous call to a news agency, Israel Radio reported. Mughniyeh, a Hezbollah terrorist leader, was assassinated last year. Hezbollah blames Israel for the killing, though Israel has never claimed responsibility for the hit.
The men were shot at close range in their patrol car while driving near the settlement of Masua, in the northern West Bank, according to reports. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the victims, who were found critically wounded in their overturned car. The two were pronounced dead at the scene.
David Rabinovitch, 42, and Yehezkel Ramzarker, 50, were buried Monday.
An Israel Police spokesman told Ha’aretz that the shots were likely fired by one or more Palestinian gunmen, though no Palestinian group has claimed responsibility.
Police were searching the area for the gunmen.
