JERUSALEM (JTA) — Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will continue to lead his Fatah party.

Abbas, who was named to succeed the late Yasser Arafat as head of the party in 2004, was elected Saturday in an unopposed race to serve as party chief. The election came during the Fatah congress in Bethlehem, the first such conference in 20 years.

Elections for the party’s main governing bodies, the 18-member Central Committee and the 120-member Revolutionary Council, began Sunday evening.
