Swastikas, politics, dealing in garbage

The Jackson Citizen Patriot in Michigan is reporting that a Jackson County commissioner showed up bearing a swastika at a rally to protest the local Democratic congressman, Mark Schauer, and the Obama administration’s plans for health care.

Just to make clear, no one is accusing Philip Duckham — one of 12 commissioners — of espousing Nazism, just of descrating the Holocaust by comparing it, well, to a health care plan.

Duckham, who is very clever, makes that clear himself, because he borrows both from the Nazis and Ghostbusters. His swastika is in a circle with a line through it. So he’s against Nazis. And the health care plan.

Here’s Duckham channeling Niemoller:

"This is how Hitler started out," Duckham said. "First, Obama took over the auto industry, then the banking industry. We don’t need him to take over the health-care industry."

This is what county commissioners do, according to the Jackson County Web site:

The Board defines the role and guides the actions of the organization in ensuring the future of Jackson County. The Commission establishes policies and appoints a County Administrator to implement the policies and manage the operations of the County. The Commission annually approves the budget which determines the revenue and expenditures necessary to operate all County departments. Please take a moment to get to know the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.

Let’s do that. Take a moment to get to know Phil. He’s 57 or thereabouts. He’s married to his best friend. He went to Napoleon High School. (Uh-oh.) He’s "not afraid to face the issues" and brings "common sense and best judgment" to helping to govern Jackson County.

Oh, and he’s "co-owner and President of Modern Waste Systems Inc., a refuse and recycle company, based in Napoleon."

Uh-oh.
