KIEV, Ukraine (JTA) — An international conference on the liberation of ghetto and concentration camp prisoners during World War II was held in Odessa.
More than 200 researchers from Ukraine, the United States, Germany, Israel and Russia met in Odessa over the weekend to mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of prisoners of ghetto and concentration camps located on the territory of the former Soviet Union.
The organizers – the regional department of the Association of the Prisoners of Ghetto and Concentration Camps, together with local authorities – also organized the screening of the films on the Holocaust and role of the Red Army in the liberation of Odessa.
A commemorative meeting during which righteous gentiles were recognized was held in Odessa’s Prohorovsky Square.
Israeli diplomats, academics, righteous gentiles, survivors, and representatives of Jewish community and local authorities took part in the ceremony.
The conference addressed the problem of the Holocaust and Ukrainian-Jewish relations during and after World War II.
