JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli military commander was suspended after beating a soldier in his brigade.

The soldier was hospitalized last week after the beating, which occurred following a martial arts demonstration in which the soldier slapped his superior, according to reports. The soldier suffered injuries and internal bleeding from the beating, which reportedly took place in a private room.

The incident is under investigation by the Golani infantry brigade and the military police.

"(T)his is a severe and exceptional case, not conforming to IDF norms in general and specifically to the norms of the Golani Brigade," the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. "Everything will be done to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future."

The incident, which occurred last week but was disclosed Sunday, comes amid several recent allegations of similar abuse.
