The Jewish Week garnered two first place awards and one second-place honor in the annual Simon Rockower Journalism contest sponsored by the American Jewish Press Association.
Editor and Publisher Gary Rosenblatt won top honors for his Between the Lines column, capturing the Louis Rapoport Award for Excellence in Commentary. The three columns dealt with the day school crisis, saying Kaddish and the controversy surrounding New York Times’ columnist Roger Cohen’s writing on Iran.
The paper also won first place for Special Sections or Supplements for its Text/Context journal, which appears 10 times a year. Jewish Week Book Critic Sandee Brawarsky edits Text/Context, whose subtitle is “Fresh Encounters with Jewish Tradition.” The winning issue, from May 2009, focused on language. It was designed by Jewish Week Art Director Dan Bocchino. Text/Context is a collaboration between The Jewish Week and Nextbook.
Washington correspondent James D. Besser won second place in News Reporting for “J Street Facing Stiff Challenges Amid Rise,” about the pro-peace process political action committee.
The awards were presented last week at the AJPA’s annual conference in Phoenix.
