Flawed Training

I was sorry that the unnamed rabbinic student found Israel’s relations with the Palestinians as “incredibly painful” (“Alienation From Israel Hitting Liberal Seminaries,” editor’s column, May 6).

How sad that we did not hear of the slaughter of the Fogel family, Gilad Shalit’s prolonged, agonizing captivity or the persistence of the terror of rocket attacks by Hamas into the southern part of Israel as causing her such pain. Rabbi David Ellenson speaks of another student “who told him that her rabbinate will be about her love for Torah, nor about Israel.” There must be something deeply flawed in the rabbinic training itself to promote this kind of misguided and warped approach to the Judaism that is being taught.
