NEW YORK (JTA) — The Orthodox Union has issued fire safety guidelines for the sukkah.

According to the recommendations, burning candles should not be left unattended and should be placed in holders with glass or metal shades. Candles should be placed out of reach of children and pets, and at least 4 feet from curtains, drapes, blinds, kitchen cabinets and bedding. Hair and clothing should be secured when lighting and handling candles.

Extension cords used in the sukkah should be specifically designed for the outdoors. Heaters should be avoided because children and animals can tip them over. High wattage lights should not be placed next to anything flammable.

The OU guidelines were developed based on the guidelines of the Teaneck, N.J., fire department and in consultation with the New York Fire Department and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
