Birthday song for George Washington

George Washington

On July 30, 1931, a Jewish congressman had the privilege of introducing a song written in honor of George Washington’s bicentennial birthday, observed Feb. 22 the following year:

Shortly after George M. Cohan had presented to President Hoover the first copy of "Father of the Land We Love," the song written for the George Washington bi-centennial, Congressman Sol Bloom, associate director of the bicentennial commission, sang Mr. Cohan’s song for the first time to an audience of newspapermen in the White House press room.

Listen to the song here, as recorded by Grant Raymond Barrett in Feb. 2006.

The original sheet music for this song can be viewed online at the Spencer Collection of American Popular Sheet Music at Baylor University.
