I have difficulty understanding The Jewish Week editorial raising questions with regard to President Barack Obama’s position on Israel (“Pushing The Candidates On Mideast Policy,” Oct. 12).
A clearer understanding could be found in the lead letter to the editor, titled “Simplistic Narrative,” in the same issue, from reader Matt Gordon who cogently makes the case that Obama’s honest differences of opinion with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu do not make Obama any less committed to protecting the integrity of Israel.
Gov. Mitt Romney’s dismissal of Obama when it relates to Israel can best be understood as without any foundation by the fact that the president, flanked by American Jewish leaders, signed the Enhanced Security Cooperation Act and was praised by Israeli officials. Israeli Minister of Defense Ehud Barak stated: “… I should tell you honestly that this administration under President Obama is doing, in regard to our security, more than anything I can remember in the past.”
Romney’s attempt to portray himself as the only savior of Israel is nothing more than a political ploy to capture the Jewish vote. His portrayal of Obama as being indifferent to Israel is false, and making it a political issue is an insult to the vast majority of Jewry who are capable of making a decision based upon credible facts.
