Giving a cow isn’t most people’s idea of a great Chanukah present, but the folks at Heifer International are trying to change that.

Heifer donates cows to improverished communities around the world out of the belief — shared by at least one notable Jewish philosopher — that it’s preferable to give people the means to provide for themselves, rather than aid that breeds dependency (and often worse). This year, they’re launching a Chanukah push, with a special section on their website and a promo video featuring Ed Asner.
