JERUSALEM (JTA) — A car exploded in northern Tel Aviv in what police believe was an assassination attempt against a leader of a mob family.

At least seven people were injured in the Thursday afternoon blast.

Police believe a motorcycle rider drove by the car belonging to mob kingpin Nissim Alperon and placed the bomb on the vehicle. Alperon and a passenger reportedly jumped from the car before it went up in flames. The windows of an empty bus driving next to the car were shattered.

Haaretz reported that it was the eighth attempt on Alperon’s life in the last 12 years.
