The average salary of a young employee working at a Jewish communal agency is $66,044, according to a survey released by a group of professionals in that field. The group also found that among factors affecting salary, being a woman lowered average pay, while foundation work is big bucks.
The median income was $56,000.
Because the survey was “crowdsourced,” or sent out using what the researchers called “the snowball method” of Facebook, listservs and other social media methods, it is skewed heavily toward younger people; almost half the 1,651 usable responses came from people under 32.
Nearly three quarters of respondents were women while 27 percent were men.
The average male salary was $83,388 while the average female salary was $59,654. The bottom 25 percent of all respondents earn under $40,000 per year while the top 25 percent earn more than $82,000. Just one percent of respondents earn over $200,000.
The key findings, first published by the web site eJewish Philanthropy, suggests that being a woman means $8,679 less per year.
Among other factors that affect pay: Living in New York added an average of $10,900 per year, while the ability to negotiate a salary added $6,317. A Master’s degree was worth an additional $6,052 to respondents while those lucky enough to work for foundations earned an extra $29,429.
The largest share of respondents, 31 percent, live in New York, while 9 percent live in Washington, DC, and 5 percent each live in Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston.
The findings were presented at a panel discussion of the network group Advancing Jewish Professionals of New York City. A more detailed report of the findings will be released at a later, unannounced date.
