My reaction to Temple Israel’s Kehillah program is — it’s about time (“Jewish Child Care Model Poised For Growth Spurt,” March 29).
In 1979, I was looking for a Jewish day care program for infants in New York City. There was none. The best program I could find was Seton Day Care at the old New York Foundling Hospital. Every day, I walked under the big cross in the entrance foyer to bring my babies to a safe place with an educational program. If I had been unaffiliated, I would have been tempted by Catholic outreach.
Instead, my sons started kindergarten at Ramaz. They have grown up to be good Jewish men, and I have Jewish grandchildren. How many opportunities for affiliation at an early age has the Jewish community missed in the past three decades? When will such programs be available throughout New York City and its suburbs?
