JERUSALEM (JTA) — A New Orleans-born Palestinian teen was sentenced to two weeks in an Israeli prison for throwing rocks at cars on an Israeli highway.
Mohammed Khalek, 14, was sentenced Wednesday by an Israeli court and also was fined more than $800. He likely will be released on Sunday, since he has been in jail since being arrested on April 5.
U.S. consular authorities visited the teen in prison, Reuters reported.
Khalek was taken from his home in the early morning by Israeli soldiers after being shackled and blindfolded, the Associated Press reported.
He was arrested for throwing rocks at cars and Israeli soldiers on more than one occasion.
The Palestinian human rights organization Addameer said the teen’s dental braces were broken during interrogation.
