With the recent proliferation of televised cooking competitions, food preparation has become something of a sport these days—a sport off-limits to observant Jews, due to strict dietary laws.

Enter the KC Kosher BBQ competition, being held August 18 in Overland Park, Kansas. While the culinary drama won’t play out on a nationally broadcast reality show, it will be judged by a reality show star, Simon Majumdar of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate,” “Iron Chef,” and “The Next Iron Chef.”

The Indian-British foodie will sample and rate the best kosher chicken, ribs and Kansas City style (i.e., slow cooked and smoked) brisket around. The Vaad HaKashruth, the kosher supervising agency of the Greater Kansas City Jewish community as well as the event’s host, is hoping he drums up a bigger audience than last year—although at 3,000 it was a pretty decent turnout.
