Congregation Shaarkey Zedek in Winnipeg hosted a “Death Cafe” – a program that allows people to come together to talk about death and dying in a social setting – earlier this month, according to the Canadian Jewish News.
The concept is widespread throughout Europe and the United States, the newspaper said.
“In our society, people don’t often have the opportunity to talk about death and dying,” said Brenda Borzykowsky, the program’s chair, who encountered the concept in a Toronto newspaper, according to the News.
Participants sat eight to a table with a facilitator and talked about death such as how difficult it is to prepare for it and the possibility of becoming incapacitated, the News reported.
