(JTA) — Mort Klein was re-elected as national president of the Zionist Organization of America after facing his first challenger in a 20-year tenure.
Klein garnered 93 percent of the vote on Sunday at the ZOA’s 97th National Convention in Philadelphia. The incumbent defeated the group’s vice chairman, Steven Goldberg, by a vote of 115-9.
Goldberg, who has been in his post since 2010, decided to run after Klein announced in February 2012 that the organization lost its 501c3 charitable tax-exemption status after failing to file the required forms with the Internal Revenue Service for three consecutive years.
U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a contender for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2012, delivered the convention’s keynote address.
