A Timeline Of Attacks On Synagogues

This week’s fatal terrorist attack on the Torat Moshe yeshiva-synagogue in the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem was the latest act of violence against a Jewish house of worship in recent decades. Among the other ones are:

1979: A bomb explodes in a Vienna building that houses a synagogue. Anti-Semitic grafitti is scrawled at a Zurich synagogue where a bomb is found.A series of bom attacks at Buenos Aires synagogues.

1980: A bomb explosion at a synagogue on rue Copernic in Paris kills four people and injures 40. A bomb explodes in a Cairo synagogue. Abu Nidal members carry out a grenade attack on an Antwerp synagogue.

1981: Two terrorists armed with guns and grenades kill two people during a bar mitzvah service at the Israelite Temple in Vienna.

1982: Palestinian terrorists storm the Great Synagogue of Rome with grenades and submachine guns during Shabbat services, killing a 2-year-old child and injuring 37 people. A gunman fires a machine gun at a Brussels synagogue. Terrorists throw an explosive charge at the antrance of the main synagogue in Lima, Peru. About 30 shots are fired at a synagogue in Guebwiller, France. Molotov cocktails are thrown at a synagogue in Cork, Ireland. A molotov cocktail is thrown at a synagogue in Edinburgh, Scotland, and at a synagogue in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

1983: A bomb explodes outside a synagogue in Guatemala City. A bomb is thrown at a synagogue in Barranquilla, Colombia.

1985: Palestinian terrorists bomb the main synagogue in Stockholm, Sweden. A bomb explodes in the Great Synagogue of Copenhagen. A policeman opens fire at the Ghirba synagogue in Tunisia.

1986: Gunmen kill 22 worshippers during Shabbat services at the Neve Shalom synagogue in Istanbul.

1988: A bomb is thrown at the El Poblado synagogue in Medellin, Colombia. A synagogue in Bogota, Colombia, is attacked. Shots are fired at a Panama City synagogue. Molotov cocktails are thrown at the Beit Hatikva synagogue in Los Angeles. Incendiary bombs are thrown at the synagogue in Munster, Germany.

1990: An explosive device detonates outside a synagogue in Santiago, Chile. A bom explodes at a Lima synagogue. Petrol bombs are thrown at a synagogue in Melbourne, Australia. A bomb explodes outside a synagogue in Johannesburg. Shots are fired at the Beth Israel synagogue in San Francisco, and at synagogues in San Leandro and Oakland.

1991: Shots are fired at a synagogue in Lyons, France. A bomb is thrown at a synagogue in Porto Alegre, Argentina.

1992: A bomb explodes at Istanbul’s Neve Shalom synagogue, causing no injuries. Members of Islamic Jihad and the Islamic Revenge Organization claim responsibility for an attack on an Ankara, Turkey, synagogue.

1999: A TNT bomb destroys two floors of the Marina Roscha synagogue in Moscow.

2000: A synagogue in Dusseldorf, Germany, is firebombed. Firebombs are thrown at a synagogue in Minsk, Belarus.

2002: A synagogue in Marseilles, France, is doused with gasoline and burns to the ground. A car attacks another French synagogue, in Lyons, and a synagogue in Brussels, Belgium, is firebombed. In Kiev, Ukraine, a synagogue is attacked by a mob yelling “Kill the Jews.” A natural gas truck fitted with explosives is detonated outside the ancient Ghriba Synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba, killing 19 people.

2003: A pair of truck bombs explode outside two synagogues during Saturday morning services at two synagogue in Istanbul, Turkey, killing 27 people and injuring more than 300.

2006: Three men fire shots into an Oslo, Norway, synagogue.

2008: An attack on the Chabad Center in Mumbai, India, takes six lives, including the young Lubavitch couple who led the synagogue-educational center.

2009: Arsonists attempt to burn down a synagogue in northwest London. Intruders break into the largest synagogue in Caracas, Venezuela, destroying religious artifacts, painting anti-Semitic slogans and stealing a computer database of the congregation’s membership. Skinheads firebomb a synagogue in Khabarovsk, eastern Russia.

2010: Vandals commit arson and write graffiti at the Etz Hayyim synagogue in Crete, a Greek island.

2012: Demonstrators in an anti-Israel rally hurl fireworks inside the largest synagogue in Caracas, Venezuela.

July 2014: Pro-Palestinian demonstrators yelling “Death to Jews” attempt to break into synagogues in Paris.

September 2014: In what police call a “criminal act,” a fire breaks out in a Brussels synagogue.
