Sabra Dipping Co. LLC announced today the voluntary nationwide recall of 30,000 cases of its Classic Hummus products because of a risk of food poisoning from possible Listeria contamination that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly or people with weakened immune systems.
The U.S, Food and Drug Administration said in a statement that no illnesses have been reported to date. Among the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes in healthy adults are short-term symptoms of fever, headaches, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recall was issued after the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development discovered potential contamination March 30 during a random, routine inspection of the product found on the shelf of a retail store.
There are five different Sabra Classic Hummus packages involved in the recall: the 10 and 30 oz. containers; the 32-ounce container of Classic Hummus Without Garnish; the 17-ounce six-pack, and the 23.5-ounce Hummus Dual Pack Classic/Garlic.
The FDA urges that all consumers who have purchased this item dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with any questions may call toll free 1-888-957-2272, Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
