WARSAW, Poland (JTA) – Nine tombstones were destroyed at the Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-Biala in southern Poland.
Among the damaged tombstones was that of Karol Korn, an architect who designed and built nearly the entire city center and also built the funeral building on the cemetery premises, Dorota Wiewiora, president of the Jewish Community in Bielsko-Biala, told the Polish Press Agency. There are no suspects in the vandalism.
Two months ago, seven gravestones were destroyed in a vandalism attack.
The cemetery in Bielsko-Biala was founded in the first half of the 19th century and is still in use. Four Muslims who died during World War I are also buried there.
In June 2000, a commemorative plaque was unveiled in the cemetery in honor of Jewish inhabitants of Bielsko-Biała who died fighting for the Polish army in World War II.
