“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” a television series produced by Amazon Studios, was nominated for an Emmy Award in the category of “Outstanding Comedy Series.” The series follows the adventures of 1950s Jewish housewife Midge Maisel as she embarks on a stand-up comedy career.
Several actors from the series have also been nominated for Emmy awards. Rachel Brosnahan, the actor who plays the title character, is up for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Tony Shalhoub, who plays Midge’s irritable father, is a nominee for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Alex Borstein — who, unlike Brosnahan and Shalhoub, is herself Jewish — is nominated for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her turn as Susie Myerson, Midge’s agent.
The series has currently aired only its first season; after enthusiastic response to the pilot, Amazon picked up the show for two seasons.
Other Jewish representation in this year’s pool of Emmy nominees include Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for “Outstanding Comedy Series,” and Lily Tomlin for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Frankie Bergstein on “Grace and Frankie,” a character who regularly references her Judaism.
