Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Roger Daltrey, the legendary frontman of The Who, will appear at a Shabbaton on January 15th at the Orthodox West Side Institutional Synagogue.
The "Tommy" singer will discuss "what it’s like to be him, his connection to Jewish people and his charity work," said the congregation’s president, Andrew Fox. Also appearing at the Saturday event, which begins at noon, will be Ellen Foley, who gained fame as the female lead singer in the classic Meat Loaf song “Paradise By The Dashboard Light,” Elan Atias of Bob Marley and the Wailers and “Jewish gospel” singer Joshua Nelson.
While the singers may perform songs "if the mood strikes them," Fox said, there will be no musical instruments or sound system in use because of Shabbat.
Fox, 43, said the "Rock and Roll Shabbaton" is part of the shul’s "experiment on what modern Orthodoxy is going to become." He said the shabbaton and previous events have been arranged by rock concert promoter and producer David Fishoff, who is the father-in-law of the congregation’s rabbi, Shlomo Einhorn. Admission to the event is $100.
