Ukraine’s president asked his ministers to create a set of measures to counteract racial intolerance and xenophobia.

Viktor Yuschenko in letters to Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko and Internal Minister Yuriy Lutsenko noted the increasing number of cases of xenophobia, racial and national intolerance reported by the national media, according to the president’s press service.

The ministers’ offices, he said, needs “to work out an effective program of counteraction to all forms of xenophobia, racial and national intolerance in Ukraine as well as to institute criminal proceedings against those guilty of the above-mentioned crimes.”

Yuschenko is seeking an analysis of the situation and a rapid response in such cases, including investigations and arrests. He also says education is needed for young people.
