JERUSALEM (JTA) — Lebanon says a massive pocket of natural gas discovered near Haifa’s Mediterranean coast may be in its territorial waters.
The find was announced Sunday by the U.S.-based Noble Energy Inc., which has been drilling at the Tamar-1 site in cooperation with Israeli partners for the past five years.
Lebanon’s Ministry for Energy and Water will lobby for the drill site to be registered with the United Nations, according to Ynet. Beirut imports most of its natural gas from Egypt.
The more than 3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas could serve Israel’s needs for about 15 years and lessen its dependence on outside sources, according to reports.
