(JTA) — The Chabad House in Koh Samui, Thailand, has plans to rebuild after major flooding destroyed the Jewish center.
All traveling Jewish backpackers safely left the area, which was flooded last week after torrential rains, Chabad.org reported.
Damages to the Chabad center were estimated initially at about $70,000.
“All the electrical equipment, all the computers, the furniture and books are ruined,” Rabbi Yosef Kantor, director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Thailand, told Chabad.org.
The ark that held the Chabad center’s Torah scrolls also was destroyed by the flooding, but the staff was able to rescue the Torah scrolls.
Kantor said, “We are doing everything we can to reopen the Chabad House as soon as possible.”
