The stream of tributes paid to Louis Marshall, who died last week in Zurich, continues undiminished. The following are among those which continue to pour in:

The Iota Theta Law Fraternity, legal fraternity, adopted the following resolution:

“Whereas: It is with a sense of deep personal loss that we, brother Jews and fellow lawyers, are bereaved and downcast by the death of our beloved exemplar Louis Marshall.

“Whereas: His life was replete with noble resolution, staunch righteousness, human kindliness and his wisdom that was, and continues to stimulate the finest impulses of our hearts.

“Whereas: He leaves with us a tradition in keeping with the ideals of our race and profession that challenges and demands that we strive and conquer for the aid of our unfortunate suffering brethren so that a new hope may grow in their hearts.

“Be it resolved, that the Iota Theta Law Fraternity in conclave assembled. do with bowed heads and sorrowed hearts, herewith solemnly dedicate ourselves to the ideals for which so nobly stood our departed brother, Louis Marshall. so that our finest tribute to his spirit shall be the lives we shall henceforth live.”

Oscar Leonard, Washington, D. C. “The loss of a closest kinsman could not be felt more than I feel the loss of Louis Marshall. I had the privilege of working with him from time to time and I know his devotion. Last time it was my privilege to be with him was in Atlanta, Ga.. where he came to address the B’nai Brith convention. He was full of life and good fellowship. His hopes for Israel were great. In his presence one felt that every fiber of him was Jewish. He attributed it to the love his mother had instilled in his heart for his people.

“It is for the living to honor the memory of this great Jew by redoubling their efforts in behalf of the causes he cherished. The Jewish Agency is almost orphaned in a time of crisis with Louis Marshall gone. It is for his friends to help in this hour of great need and deep sorrow.”

Louis Weiss, Acting Nasi of the Order Sons of Zion-“In common with Jewry the world over, and particularly the Zionist element, of which our Order is a component part, we mourn the death of Mr. Marshall. The crowning achievement of his distinguished career, the consummation of the Jewish Agency, will long stand as a memorial to his efforts for a stronger and more united Jewry. Our Order will remember him as a leader in Israel’s ranks and as one who concluded his life as an ardent champion of a restored Zion.”

Rabbi Solomon Goldman, Chicago-“So death has claimed Louis Marshall. The roar of the lion has been stilled. He, who at 70 displayed the courage and fearlessness-the voice and manner-of youth, has fallen. It is hard to adjust one’s self to this bit of news. We had not yet begun to think of Louis Marshall as an old man. So diversified and multiplied were his responsibilities to the very last, that to most of us he was in the prime of life-in the midst of an endless career of leadership and service.

“The keynote to Mr. Marshall’s personality, we feel, was his profound Jewishness. Nothing Jewish was alien to him. That which promised to help maintain and continue the Jewish heritage struck a responsive chord in the big heart of this great man.”
