While the reactionary press protests against “the interention of the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in German internal affairs” it urges the German states to disregard the letter from the foreign minister to the minister of the interior telling him that the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Telegraphic Agency had called the attention of the German ambassador in Washington to the schechita ban in Bavaria and the reports of Jewish cemetery desecrations.
The Jewish press on the other hand reprints the letter and expresses satisfaction that the Foreign Office considers “the feelings of American Jews by recognizing that the schechita ban and the desecration of Jewish cemeteries is harmful to German prestige abroad.” Although the Democratic press has so far not reprinted the letter it is known that in important political circles the warning that the Reich government sent to the German states is approved.
The “Voelkische Beobachter” in its Easter issue published the foreign minister’s letter which pointed out that the German ambassador in Washington had received letters from the managing director of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and from the president of the American Jewish Committee calling the ambassador’s attention to the cemetery violations and the ban on schechita. As made public yesterday in New York by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency the letters from neither could be interpreted as intervention in German internal affairs.
