Cablegrams of congratulation to King Carol II on the occasion of his ascension to the Roumanian throne have been sent by the United Roumanian Jews of America and by the Roumanian Jewish Committee of America. The cablegram by the United Roumanian Jews, signed by Leo Wolfson, president, and Herman Speier, secretary, reads as follows:
“His Majesty Carol II,
King of Roumania.
Bucharest, Roumania.
“The United Roumanian Jews of America respectfully greets Your Majesty on your ascension to the Roumanian throne. We note with pleasure the statement contained in the royal message addressed to the Roumanian people without distinction of religion. We wish your majesty a complete realization of a great country and nation, with the hope that our brethren will also be called upon to cooperate in freedom and equality to the prosperity of the country of our birth”.
The Roumanian Jewish Committee sent its message of congratulation to the Roumanian Minister in Washington. It is signed by Sol S. Myers, president; Edward Herbert, secretary; Bennett E. Siegelstein, Solomon Sufrin, Leo Fischer and Herman Fischer. The message reads as follows:
“His Exellency Carol Davila,
“Kindly convey to His Majesty King Carol II and to the Roumanian nation the congratulations of the Roumanian Jewish Committee of America. Roumanian Jewry rejoices in the ascension of His Majesty to the throne of Roumania. Roumanian Jews in America sincerely look forward to the beginning of a peaceful life of brotherhood and understanding among all the inhabitants of Roumania. That His Majesty’s regime may be crowned with an era of peace and prosperity to all the inhabitants of Roumania is our fervent prayer”.
Mr. Sufrin, who knows King Carol well, having conducted the latter about New York when the young prince visited this country before the war, predicted in a statement to the press that Roumania will now, under King Carol, be full of peace and prosperity and harmony between Jew and Gentile.
“He is very democratic”, said Mr. Sufrin, in speaking of the new king. “Carol was much more a European than a Balkan prince. He was educated in Berlin, Vienna and London. He began early to question the absolute control of the liberals under the Brataniu family which held sway for many years and among other things, subjected the Jews to ill treatment”.
