The Jews of Waterbury are continuing to protest vigorously against the introduction of religious instruction in public schools here during the school hours. Among the leaders in the protest movement is Rabbi Harry E. Schwartz.
When the plan of introducing religious instruction during school hours was first proposed a few years ago, Rabbi Schwartz took a firm stand against it at meetings of representatives of the three denominations, and took a similar stand the following year. When the plan was finally proposed before the Board of Education this year, Rabbi Schwartz together with Rabbi Isidore Breslau, Alexander Amden, principal of the Waterbury Hebrew Institute; Attorney Herman J. Weisman and Rabbi Moses Sheinkopf drafted a memorandum which was submitted to the Mayor of this city, other city officials and some members of the Board of Education.
