The commemoration of the first anniversary of the riots of last Summer continued today with the solemnization of the yahrzeit (death anniversary) of the Jews who were murdered in Hebron. The famous Hurva synagogue here was crowded with mourners who came to attend the rites at which Chief Rabbi Kook was one of the speakers. The memorials were everywhere well attended despite the government prohibition on mass demonstrations.
Memorials for the Jewish victims of the riots will be held all week in various towns and cities until the anniversary of the attack on Safed is reached. The Jews of Safed were attacked six days after the outbreak in Jerusalem.
Relatives and friends of the murdered Jews made pilgrimages today to the graves of their dear ones. Individual observances of the yahrzeit were common with the heart-rending cries of widows and piercing wails of orphans breaking the general silence. On some cemeteries relatives were dedicating tombstones. The most poignant observance was in the Hebron yeshivah where the bulk of the Jews were killed.
At the memorial services of the Agudath Israel in Jerusalem Rabbi Ben Zion Adler said that the suspension of immigration was tantamount to a decree of annihilation coming after “the murderers had launched their bloody deeds from the Temple hill.” In Tel Aviv moving picture houses and other places of amusement were closed.
