Colonial Office Probing Ban on Sunday Work at Haifa Bay

The British government is entirely uninformed about the recent order of the High Commissioner of Palestine suspending all Sunday work on the Haifa Bay construction work, the House of Commons was informed today by Dr. Drummond Shiels, under-secretary for the Colonies, in response to a question from James Hall, the recently elected Labor member from Whitechapel.

Mr. Hall demanded that the government take steps against the High Commissioner’s action. Dr. Shiels said that Lord Passfield, Colonial Secretary, is communicating with Sir John Chancellor regarding the matter and when a reply is received the question will be considered by the Colonial Office.

The action of the High Commissioner in this regard means that Jewish and Moslem workers must either work on their respective Sabbaths or else forfeit a day’s pay.
