A mass demonstration in which 30,000 merchants and artisans participated to protest against the government for favoring agriculture was suddenly transformed into a hostile throng calling for a boycott against the Jews.

Incited by Nazi speakers who called for opposition to “Jewish control of trade and artisanship,” the crowd took up the shout: “Do not buy from Jews!”

The fact that no protest against this agitation was heard from the merchants in the demonstration, is regarded here as another indication of the growing sympathy of the middle classes for the Nazis.
