A Nazi motion before the Reichstag commission produced a witty reply by the Social Democratic Deputy Faust. The Nazi motion suggested that farmers be permitted to pay taxes in kind instead of money. Amidst general amusement, Deputy Faust pointed out that the Nazis were apparently attempting to restore the tax system of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to whom they were otherwise opposed. They apparently wished to return to Old Testament times when harvest offerings were substituted for taxes.
