Professors of various universities throughout Germany have united in condemnation of the resolution adopted against Professor Ernst Cohn by the Senate and Rector of the University of Breslau.
The resolution, which is condemned as degrading the University system as a whole, declared that “the continuation of Professor Cohn’s lectures cannot be tolerated since Professor Cohn has not maintained the necessary political reserve.”
The protest against the professor, who has been for months the target of Nazi opposition and attack, was based on a statement made by Professor Cohn in reply to a question by a newspaper man as to whether or not Leon Trotsky, the exiled Soviet leader, merits asylum in Germany. Professor Cohn replied : “Spiritual workers always deserve protection if they avoid agitation as politicians of whom we have plenty ourselves.”
A number of professors have addressed letters to the “Vossische Zeitung” denouncing the attitude of the officials of Breslau University as destroying the dignity of the University.
