This city has received a legacy of twelve thousand marks left it by a Jewish couple, Moritz Bachrach and his wife, because they stipulated in their will the bequest was on condition that the city undertake to care for their graves in the Jewish cemetery.
The municipal council, Nazi-controlled, in voting to reject the bequest declared that Herr Bachrach, who was one of the most respected citizens of the city, had “accumulated millions swindling the tax authorities”.
